Ever since I had that Mint Moose Tracks ice cream last weekend, I keep thinking about it. I know, that’s kind of sad. I don’t know what it is about the combination of chocolate, mint, and ice cream that is so delicious. Given the fact that I’m trying to drop a few pounds, I should steer clear of cold, creamydesserts, but sometimes I just can’t help myself.
I’m sure many of you have heard of Magic Shell, right? For anyone who hasn’t, it’s basically chocolate sauce that hardens when you pour it over cold ice cream. It gives the ice cream a little shell. It’s pretty amazing stuff. Plus, once it’s hardened, you can hit it with a spoon and it cracks into wonderful pieces of chocolate goodness.
While I wish I could say I came up with the homemade version, I didn’t. I’ve seen a lot of bloggers making it and just had to give it a try. When I saw the Nutella version, I couldn’t resist. I was happy to discover that it’s insanely simple and only requires two ingredients.
Let me show you.
How to Make Nutella Magic Shell:
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1/3 cup Nutella
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
Let’s get cooking:
Combine the Nutella and coconut oil in a small, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir until combined. If needed, microwave at 10 second intervals, stirring in between. The resulting sauce will be very smooth. Allow to cool slightly.
Then, simply pour over cold ice cream.
Yep, it’s truly that simple. I really don’t like to mess around with overly complicated recipes.
I personally love this with mint chocolate chip, but your options are endless.
You can store this magic shell in an airtight container at room temperature. Should it harden based on the temperature in your house, just microwave the sauce for a few seconds until smooth.
And doesn’t it look totally adorable in these stoneware ice cream cones? I got them from Pottery Barn and they may just be the coolest (no pun intended) pieces of serveware I own. They even havethe little diamond pattern in the cone. Perfection. (PS. They are totally on sale right now!)
I mean, they don’t even need anything in them and they look great! Wouldn’t it be fun to have a little ice cream bar and fill them with toppings? So cute.
I also got this vintage-inspired Ice Cream Soda sign. (Also from Pottery Barn and also on sale!) I think it will look perfect on my side porch.
Okay, enough talk about ice cream. I need to get back to work.
Have you made magic shell at home? If not, have I convinced you to try it?

Love the mermaid. New to the blog – saw on Pinterest. My newest favorite drink for summer is made like this – (it doesn’t have a name yet…) – mash a slice of peeled cucumber in the bottom of a tall glass, add ice, add vodka, add club soda, add a splash of white cranberry juice. Enjoy!
Made this last week and made it a second time yesterday – so delicious and simple. Love the fact that you can have homemade magic shell without all the trans fat that’s in the store-bought kind 🙂
I have a question, does it have to be coconut oil? and any suggestions on where i can buy it?? I know a young man who will go GAGA over this and want to make him some 🙂
I don’t have a recipe that doesn’t include coconut oil, so I’m not sure how to make it differently. You could try googling it? I found the coconut oil at Wal-Mart. I live in a pretty small town so I assume it should be readily available. Also, if you live near a Trader Joes or Whole Foods they sell it as well. Good luck!

I just made this for me and my boyfriend. It was so amazing. You can still kind of taste the coconut with my coconut oil and I love that. So good even on our plain vanilla bean ice cream
Glad you and your BF enjoyed the recipe!

So excited to try this, I love the simplicity! Wondering if there is a coconut flavor to the final product.
I didn’t notice one. I never really do when using coconut oil.

Hi Michael, I am always amazed and happy to see how Nutella becomes more and more part of the american cuisine!! I grew up here in Germany and Nutella was “our peanutbutter”.Although, originally it was only used as spread on our breakfast rolls, it finally made it’s entrance into the german baking/dessert world. I used to live in the US for 20 years, I am back here now for the last 5 years.Since then my daughter that lives in the US with her family, got me interested/addicted to pinterest. The pin about your love for white dishes made me discover your blog, and this is how I saw yet another recipe that includes Nutella. It seem only like yesterday that I introduced my best friend Shelly and then several other ladies to Nutella. Back then everybody was amazed that we spread Chocolate on our bread!!! But it sure didn’t take long to become as well liked as it is here in Germany.
So that’s about it, but I am glad I discovered your blog and look forward to more inspiration. Wishing you a lovely day Birgit
I think I love you.
