I was completely inspired by a modern farmhouse that was pictured In the May issue of Better Homes & Gardens. The house was styled by Jill Sharp Brinson. I’ve been a huge fan of Jill and her work ever since I had the pleasure to meet her last year in Atlanta.

While I love so many of the home’s details, I was especially drawn to the front porch. Instead of using big planters, Jill opted for baskets. Filled mostly with greens, they added such warmth and texture and gave the space a casual, homey look.

While shopping at HomeGoods a few weeks ago I found two large baskets and a couple plastic planters that fit perfectly inside. I immediately thought of Jill’s work and just had to bring them home with me. Using a drill, bricks, potting soil, plus some gorgeous plants, I created totally unique basket planters of my own.

even though you just planted them, how’s the basket handling the water draining through? or was that addressed with something not shown?

Erin, thanks for your question. So far so good. It seems to dry out fairly quickly. I’m also not opposed to the basket weathering a bit. Hope that helps.

      Thanks! Michael

I use baskets for my interior potted plants, but never thought to use them for my exterior potted plants. I love it! It really softens the look….
