  •  light-bodied Spanish wine (I used Rioja.)
  • apple cider
  • pear or apple brandy
  • cinnamon simple syrup (you’ll need cinnamon and sugar)
  • apple (I used honeycrisp)
  • anjou pear 
  • orange 
  • pomegranate seeds
  • cinnamon sticks

How To Make

In case you’ve never made sangria, don’t worry. It’s so simple. I will walk you through the steps below. I’ve also provided a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

  1. Cinnamon Simple Syrup: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water with 1 cup of sugar. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook until the sugar dissolves and the liquid just starts to thicken. Transfer the liquid to a heatproof container, add the cinnamon sticks, and chill for at least 4 hours.
  2. Prep the Fruit: Slice your apple, pear, and orange into thin wedges.
  3. Mixing Time: In a large pitcher, combine the sliced fruit, pomegranate seeds apple cider, apple brandy, and your chosen light-bodied Spanish wine.

  1. Sweeten the Mix: Stir in the cinnamon simple syrup to your desired sweetness.Then add in a couple of cinnamon sticks.
  2. Chill: Refrigerate the mixture for 2-3 hours. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
  3. Serve: Pour the sangria into glasses, ensuring some fruit slices are in each. Garnish with a cinnamon stick if desired.

    1. Hi Tara! I’m so surprised your wine and liquor stores don’t have Rioja. It’s a pretty standard / common Spanish wine. However, that’s not a problem. This recipe can use any red wine. I would choose a dry red. Cabernet Sauvignon is said to be comparable to Rioja. Pinto Noir is my favorite red wine, so that would I would select. Cheers!

  1. This is the BEST sangria we have had! I have a regular recipe I make but the whole family said this is the only one we are allowed to have from now on, no matter the season!! LOL Definitely do not skip the cinnamon simple syrup! It is the key to taking this to the next level. Sooooo good Thank you for sharing 🙂

  2. This was the best sangria ever! I almost omitted the cinn. simple syrup, and boy am I glad I didnt, that is what put it over the top as The Best!! I also added a splash of club soda! Great Recipe to enjoy around a fire on a brisk Fall night.

  3. This is currently sitting in the fridge, ready to be brought to my husband’s family gathering (where they NEVER serve anything alcoholic but were open to us bringing sangria 🙂 🙂 ). Used 1/4 cup apple whiskey instead of brandy and added whole cranberries instead of pomegranate seeds, but otherwise stayed on course with the recipe. The cinnamon syrup makes it absolutely DIVINE (at least from what I can tell from various test tastes :). Thanks for the recipe, hope it goes over well!
