Well, friends, my new space in Pittsburgh is finally starting to look like home. Last week I told you about the design plan for my new master bedroom. Today, I am thrilled to show you how it’s starting to come together.

Let’s take a peek, shall we?

Progress, right? Let me tell you, it sure beats sleeping on an air mattress (which I was doing until quite recently). A few small touches (and some not-so-small touches) have transformed this space into a welcoming retreat. And by not-so-small touches I mean my new Stearns & Foster mattress. It’s heaven.

In case you need a reference, here’s the room when I first moved in. (You can also check out my design plan here.)

And here we are today.

I’m breathing a little easier at this point. While I still have work to do, changes to make, and color to add, I couldn’t be happier with where this room stands today.

As I mentioned last week, the plan for this room started with my a new king-sized Stearns & Foster mattress. Although it’s currently hidden under layers of bed linens, it’s really the crowning jewel of the space. I’m not a great sleeper, so anything I can do to create a comfortable environment where I can rest my head at the end of the day is super important. That starts with the mattress.

There are certain pieces in the home I don’t skimp on. I spend 7-8 hours a day (ideally) on my mattress, so comfort and quality are key. I also will be keeping this mattress for a while. Because a Stearns & Foster mattress is hand-crafted with the highest quality materials, I plan to bring it along no matter where life takes me.

So once the bones of the room were in place, I was ready to start decorating.

The design for this space was inspired by the wilderness. As you can see, there’s a nod to camping/glamping amidst the comfort and style.

Because the bed frame in my St. Marys home is tufted in blue velvet, I wanted to go in a completely different direction in this space. That’s why I opted for this low profile wood frame with a saddle-toned leather headboard. Because of all the gray tones in my floors and doors, the wood adds much-needed warmth to the room.

I chose neutral bedding because I wanted the flexibility it offers for using different pillows and throws as the seasons change. Currently, I’m keeping things light and bright.

While I do plan to add more color with a rug, dresser, curtains, and accessories, I so love the color I was able to bring in with this fun woven stool and my “Keep it Wild” banner.

During my first week in my new apartment, I spotted this banner at a shop that’s just down the street from me. I was immediately attracted to the color, font, and overall design. It also fits this new life adventure. Every time I see it, it reminds me to have fun, relax, and take time to enjoy life a bit more.

Another piece I’m terribly excited about is this beautiful white and black buffalo checked chair. I’ve had my eye on it for quite some time, so I was thrilled to finally be able to incorporate it in my home. I think it fits quite nicely with the aesthetic I’m after.

As you can see, the cats are enjoying it, too. (If a chair passes the “Cat Nap Test,” you know it’s a good one.)

I also love this big, beefy, wood framed mirror. Since this room has only one window, a mirror helps bounce some of the light around. Plus, a full-length mirror is great in the bedroom for that daily “outfit check.”

Of course, I still need things like a dresser (which has been ordered), rug, and lamps. But they’re coming. All in good time.

A lot of the accessories are things I already owned. You know I’ve decided to take my time in creating and designing this new home so I don’t want to rush anything just to “get it done.” I’ve also been having so much fun shopping at my local stores, and I certainly don’t want that to end anytime soon!

So what are your thoughts about how my master bedroom is coming together? Is it what you expected?

  1. Love the adventure vibe! I’m planning my sons “big boy room” and that’s totally the vibe I’m going for but in a way that’s grown up like this, instead of really kid-ish. Also love seeing a sponsorship for a good quality mattress instead of all of those expandable foam things. We’ve had our Stearns and Foster for 7 years and still love it.

  2. I really like what you have done with your bedroom. Love the entire bed, that cute, colorful stool. Adore the chair; I want one. Great job! No matter what room you decorate it always amazes me how beautifully you do it. A very talented young man. Have you considered doing the online design thing-y from photos of peoples rooms that they would like ideas on how to decorate, where you kind of photo shop your ideas onto it? Would love it if you did. 🙂
