Have you ever had one of those weekends when you worked the entire time and then on Sunday night looked back and realized that somehow you had accomplished nothing on your to-do list? If not, consider yourself lucky. This weekend was somewhat of a hot mess for me, so I’m actually glad to see Monday arrive. I’m also really looking forward to celebrating Thanksgiving this Thursday. I’m going to make a conscious effort to stay away from technology for the entire day and simply enjoy the things around me. It should be a great day.

Even though I felt like little was accomplished, here’s what did happen around here this weekend.

Weekend Wanderlust: No. 34 | Inspired by Charm

Renew – I decided to give my fireplace a mini-facelift. As I said a while back, I’m going to be working with a contractor to get this fireplace and another fireplace functioning again. I’m also planning on some new tile. This weekend, however, I just couldn’t stand looking at the old brown tile and fireplace insert any longer and decided to do something about them.

BEFORE:

The tile got a few quick coats of gloss paint in Aloof Gray (the same color as the walls). I then removed the fireplace insert (Don’t worry, I saved it.) and added a few birch logs.

Using a drill, I created a few 1 1/2 inch holes and tucked in some tea lights. Bam! – A semi-functioning and totally adorable fireplace. (You can find the red metal baskets here and here.)

Decorate – I also played around with the mantel. I got this amazing print from Happy Red Fish. They actually used string to create the artwork. It’s beautiful. You can check it out here or see some of their other work here. I highly recommend them. And while it’s not very seasonal, it was fun playing around with it. (Learn how to make the gold candle holder here.) I’m so happy I have a mantel to decorate this year!

Change – I also finally found a tree skirt for my vintage-inspired tree. (You can check out the rest of the tree here.) It’s from the Jonathan Alder Collection at J.C. Penney. It’s kind of perfect for it, don’t you think? A little modern meets vintage. The cats think it’s pretty great, too. They spent the entire weekend curled up under the tree.

Paint – I also started painting my stools. I’m using this new trim paint. It’s super glossy and durable which is perfect for these guys. For all of my 30 years, I’ve avoided oil-based paint like the plague. It requires way more patience than I have. However, the end result is going to be totally worth it. So while I had a bit of a panic attack yesterday, I’m pressing forward and hoping to finish them up soon. I’ll show you as soon as I do.

I think that’s about it.

It should be an exciting month around here. I have some fabulous content, plus lots of holiday goodies, to share with you so stay tuned. I’m also working on a fun new project that’s basically just for you. However, that probably won’t be available for at least a couple months. I think you’re going to love it.

Have a great week, everyone!

Thanks Linda, you should see the rest of my house though. It may or may not be a complete disaster. Haha!

Oh its so cheery! Very refreshing… I can’t wait to decorate for the holidays! I have a few things to do before and no excuses for me since I have an entire week off. Love the fireplace progress so far too ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks so much Caroline. I feel like Christmas is going to sneak up with Thanksgiving being so late this year, so I’m getting as much done as possible now.

Eight!? Wow. Is that a blessing or a curse? I’d love to see them all!

I think it’s a little of both! We are still in the process of restoring the house, but you can see lots of pictures on my blog.

Hi Micheal! What kind of paint did you paint the tile with? Just latex paint that you used on the walls or something oil based?

You have inspired me to do the same, would love to know how you did it ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Hey Melissa! I just used basic latex paint. So far it’s holding up wonderfully, but I’m not sure if it would stand the test of time. Since I know this is temporary for me, I don’t mind. However, I’m very pleased with the results. I hope that helps. ๐Ÿ™‚

Michael, you always have amazing accessories! Can I ask you where you took the small colorful “sculpture” next to the candle holders on the mantel? Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thanks so much! I actually got it at a small shop called Canoe in Portland Oregon. I’m pretty sure they have a website.

The new color pallet made a huge difference and brightened up the area. I love those red baskets next to the fireplace too, by the way ๐Ÿ™‚

I can’t wait to see the finished stools and what else you are working on in that room!
