Well, it’s October again. Typically, I’m a little “haunted” by the first day of October. First, because that means the holiday season is around the corner (which is always more chaotic than I’d like). It also means that there is a chance, especially in Central PA, that it could snow this month. On top of all of that, the days are getting shorter and shorter. Oy vey!

31Days of Home | Inspired by Charm #31DaysofHome

You may also know from years past here on IBC that October is the time of year I make an attempt to blog for 31 days straight as part of The Nesting Place’s 31 Day Challenge. Last year I chose 31 Days of Happiness and ended up throwing in the towel halfway into the process. Hot Mess. In the end, that challenge ended up making me more stressed than happy. Oops!

Two years ago my topic was Trying Something New for 31 Days. Although I completed the challenge, I was a little off topic on a few days. Baby steps. So this year I’m giving myself a little kick in the pants and doing it again.

31Days of Home | Inspired by Charm #31DaysofHome

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, and the hints I dropped in previous posts, the month of October on Inspired by Charm is going to be all about home this year. I am truly the master of procrastination and excuses, especially when it comes to completing projects around the house. It may not seem like it, but trust me on this one. During the past couple days, I spent quite a bit of time prepping my former gift shoppe for my future office (more on that soon). This process has really rekindled my love of creating, rearranging, and decorating. It’s also an exciting time because with this change, my space is finally starting to feel like home. And that my friends is a pretty amazing feeling.

31Days of Home | Inspired by Charm #31DaysofHome

So while I have a several posts in mind (I even stopped by the craft store on my way home from NYC to stock up on supplies.), my current editorial calendar is completely empty for the month of October. I told you I was a procrastinator. However, what you can expect is DIY projects, table settings, fall decorating, plans for my office and progress pictures, wall art, and so much more. I know this month is going to fly by, but I’m excited to share this little home adventure with you.

For those of you who have been loving all the recipes lately, never fear. I may sneak in a few in conjunction with a home-related post. Also, you can always join me every other week over on Delish Dish for a recipe. And once October is over, we will be in full holiday mode with lots of delicious drinks and treats, entertaining ideas, and obviously more home projects.

So what do you think? Are you ready for 31 Days of Home?

31Days of Home | Inspired by Charm #31DaysofHome

As we get started, I need a couple things from you. First, let me know in the comments if you are a fellow blogger participating in the 31 Days Challenge. (Oh, and even if you aren’t a blogger, feel free to join in. Pick a topic you want to focus on for the next 31 Days Then share your progress everynow and then in the comments.) Second, is there anything you’d love to see me talk about during this challenge? More DIYs? More decorating advice? My favorite finds for the fall? I’m all ears and open to suggestions! Bring it on!

Thanks so much, everyone! I sincerely hope you are as excited about this as I am!

Quilts. I’ve quilted for over thirty years, but most have been gifts. I’m left with an album full of pictures, and I’m sharing one quilt a day this month.

I’m wondering if you have any tips on keeping a space both well decorated and soul satisfying, but truly functional as well?

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

What a fabulous idea! I love it! It’s been so long since I quilted, but you better believe I’m going to set aside some time this winter to get a few completed!

Thanks for your advice / question too!

I have been following your blog for a while and I am super excited to your 31 days. I am also participating in this years challange. I am writing about 31 days of blog planning and free printables. I would love to see some decorating advice for fall – small, simple and do-able projects.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

      Oh! Perfect idea! Love that.

And yes, you can certainly expect some fall goodies this month.

I don’t have a blog but love the idea. So as I’ve been getting a bit down lately with the departure of summer I thought I would do 31 days of positive changes. Today I started by signing up for a yoga class.
As for your blog. I’d love to see fall table settings (remember in Canada we have Thanksgiving in two weeks so helpful table ideas would be great), accessory transformations from Summer to Autumn, cheap crafts for Hallowe’en/fall, napkin folding ideas, and progress of your office and ideas for an organized but fun looking office.
    Does that help at all.
Stay Positive and remember even if you get off topic we still love to read about it. 🙂

Lisa – I just love your idea for the 31 Day challenge. I’m so happy you’re joining along. You’ll have to let me know how you like yoga. I’ve been wanting to take a class for years.

Thanks for all of the suggestions too. I will definitely touch on a lot of those things throughout the month. AND I’ll try to squeeze in a table setting post ASAP too. 😉

Cannot wait to follow along, Michael! One year ago I launched my blog with 31 Days and it nearly killed me. lol I definitely missed some days. I am still debating whether to go for it this year. I mean… it’s only 6PM EST so I may have still time. 😉
Can’t wait to read your series – you got this!!

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

You launched your blog with 31 Days!? And survived!? Congratulations! If you survived that, you can certainly do it again. Can’t wait to see if you’ll be joining along on the fun!

Not a blogger – just a follower. Would love to see more on houseplants now that we are inside more. Also, maybe some recipes for a campfire (mountain pies, etc.). I love sitting around the fire this time of year!

  • girlfromwva at

I am a follower, but not a blogger. I am looking forward to your 31 Days of Home. I would like to see tablescapes or decorating that go from minimalist to blinged out; with small, medium, and larger budgets; using thrift store finds with what you have & also incorporating new pieces.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Ooh! Perfect idea. I’ll have to give something like that a try. And I’m planning on doing some thrifting / antiquing this weekend – so stay tuned.

i can’t wait to see all your ideas!

  • Melanie at

I’m not a blogger. I’d love to see some ideas for walls for those of us who can’t afford paintings/prints. And maybe some tips on designing a wall gallery of framed snapshots.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

You read my mind Melanie. I have several DIY wall art projects floating around in my head that I will be sharing this month.

I am a newbie at the blogging thing. I’m your typical “foodie”. I was unemployed for 8 months and all of my friends have been telling me that I should start a food blog, so I did, well I’m trying. It’s far from perfect, I know that. Any advice on starting off and beginning a new blog, how to get sponsors, time management, photo taking would be greatly appreciated. My blog, at this time, is all food. I do have other interests and hobbies. I also LOVE home decor ( and I am pretty darned good at it ). I do a lot of re-purposing, painting, re-arranging furniture & rooms. I collect a lot of decor ( it’s an issue actually ) and redo rooms all of the time. Photography is another hobby/interest/passion. My blog is called Blue Eyed Soul Food. I would like to add my other interests & hobbies. Should I create a new name for my blog, start a whole new blog, etc… This kind of information would be AWESOME! I LOVE your website & am a devoted follower. You have extremely good taste, so I know that any advice you would have or share would be amazing and greatly appreciated!!!
    Just a thought,

Good for you Michael! I adore your home and I can’t wait to see what you have brewing in those big beautiful rooms, decor wise!

    See you tomorrow. 🙂

Here goes nothing D! I guess this is good prep for that week in December. Plus, I just love this topic, so it should be TOO challenging.

I think this is a great topic! Committing to posting for 31 days straight is major, so definitely do something you want to spend that time doing… it will make it easier. I’m actually doing a 31 day thing, too. I won’t be blogging every day, though. Last year, when you did your happiness thing I had started reading The Happiness Project, but never actually got past the introduction. This year, I picked it up and again and am flying through it. I decided I was going to start my own year-long happiness project, beginning with October. The next 31 days will focus on improving my energy – I’ve made charts and note sheets and I’m super giddy about it. The happiness project is already working.. ha! I do plan to blog about my process – sort of using this project as a motivation to write more. Good luck with the 31 days, I’m excited to follow along!

  • Stephanie at

Good luck! I’m a wee baby blogger, but it really is difficult. It was all fun and games when I was off over the summer, but now that I am actually trying to get stuff accomplished I fall behind on my blog game. I love your posts, pin pretty much every single thing, so I’m excited with you focusing on the home and DIY type schtuff. That’s what my bloggie focuses on, so hopefully you can help inspire/kick me in the pants.

Michael, you can do it. I am sure your series will be amazing! I will certainly eat up every post.

I am joining in on the 31 Days fun. My topic is Interior Styling. It is not because I know what I am doing, but because I want to. I thought it would be fun to take my Pinterest browsing obsession on good styling and decorating and put it into action. I haven’t written my posts yet, but I did plan and title all of them…it feels like a relief to know what I am going to write about…every day of the month!

    My series is here: http://www.tealandlime.com/2013/09/31-days-of-interior-styling/

P.S. Your bookshelves, gorgeously styled, are the cover photo on my Pinterest Styling Tips board: http://www.pinterest.com/tealandlime/styling-tips/

I will be watching your 31 Days of Home series for more styling tips to pin 🙂

hey mister! though i’m not gonna blog for 31 days straight (that would be pure craziness for me!)- i DO plan on getting something CReaTiVe DONE each & everyday. i’d ♥ to see from you HOW you organize when crunched for time. What do you put on the front burner…What do you let slide to get those important things done? For me, organization is so key to making HOME feel good and cozy and happy!! Best wishes for your 31 day adventure!

Hi…a relatively new follower here. Thoroughly enjoying each post that appears in my inbox. Truly looking forward to all you have planned for October. I’ve been blogging for several years but I’m tackling my first 31 days. Not sure what I’ve gotten myself into. lol! My topic is simple tips for healthy living. A major run in with cancer 3 years ago drove me directly to a take-care-of-me overhaul. Tons of friends and followers are always asking advice. What better way than to answer a few questions than with a 31 day challenge. Now…let’s just see if I last! 🙂

Lisa – best of luck to you on your first 31 Day! You can do it! And I just love your topic. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of tips.

Hi, Michael, I love love love this idea! I purchased my board, etc. at Lowe’s but I got my drawer pulls from Habitat for Humanity (win/win). This project is perfect because sometimes Habitat only has a couple of the cutest styles (and I’m always trying to figure out what clever thing I can do with only 2 or 3!). Voila! Now? I just need to figure out how to post the pic. Thanks so much for a great, simple project.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

You bet! So glad you are loving the project as much as I did. I can’t wait to see what yours looks like!

Hi Michael! I think I can solve your Chalkboard Wall dilemma…did you know you can make your own chalkboard paint (which means it can be ANY color)?? Check Pinterest or here’s a link to a blog that explains it all: http://messymimi.blogspot.com/2011/03/leftover-paint-what-to-do.html. Good luck! I love love love your “new” space!

Thanks for all the info Maria. I guess I was vaguely aware of this options. I just feel like I may need something completely different. Time will tell. 🙂

      Thank you again!

Michael, I’m a long time follower and I can’t wait to see what you come up with everyday! I know it’ll all be great. I’m going to attempt to join in this year, though I’m starting a couple days late. Since my blog is called The LIFE of a ‘tree, I thought I’d go with 31 Days of Life. That way I can blog about anything I want! 😉

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thank s a million Monica! And that’s such a great topic. Because, let’s face it, just blogging for 31 days is a challenge in it’s self. Right?

Hi Michael, I just found you through the 31 days challenge. Your blog and your style is beautiful. I look forward to what you’ve got in store this month. I’m sure you already have plenty of post ideas, but I just want to put one more on the pile. I would love to know some practical tips about how to create great vignettes. I can see when a vignette works well in pictures, but can’t seem to apply it in my own home. Thanks!

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Amy – I’m so glad you found me too! Good thing I linked up. Yes – I totally agree. That’s a great idea. I actually wanted to do a little video of some sorts explaining that, but haven’t found the courage to break into that avenue yet. Either way, I’ll try and come up with something for you!

    Hi Michael,

We are halfway through the month and I am enjoying your 31 day challenge. You have given me plenty of new decorating ideas and I have added you to my daily blog reading. This is my first 31 Day Challenge. I just started blogging in September so I am very new to all this. I am blogging on Dealing with Dementia/Alzheimer Disease. I came across the Nesting Place Challenge through Menu Plan Monday. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas.

It’s hard to believe we are halfway though. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! Thanks so much for stopping by. And best of luck on your challenge too!
