Last week I showed you how I spruced up my living room with some fun new accessories. As promised, I’m back with all the details on my new air plants. (This past October I bought two and have been so happy with them, I just had to get more.)

Air plants (a.k.a. Tillandsia or Tilly) are amazing little plants that don’t require soil or traditional watering to survive. Most have grassy or finger-like leaves through which they absorb water. To get these plants the moisture they need, you just soak them in water for about 20 minutes every week. Pretty amazing, right? I seriously need to hold myself back from buying every kind I can find.

I’ve been purchasing my plants from Air Plant Shop. I started ordering from them for no particular reason, but I’ve been super happy with their service. Plus, they frequently have sales.

Anyway, I labeled some pictures so you can see which plants I received. Just an FYI: you most likely won’t get an air plant that is blooming. They are also smaller than they appear online. I was surprised at first.

So those are my new little friends. Aren’t they the coolest things? I will admit they freaked me out a little at first, but now I’m totally in love and want them all over my house.

Do you have air plants in your home? Which variety is your favorite? Tell me everything!

I love you plants. I have been thinking of getting some air plants. Do they need to be by a window? Thank you for posting about them…..

They do require some non-direct sunlight as far as I know.

I really want these now too! They look so cool and are such a nice “living” touch to a room. I’m going to have to peruse the website and check it out. Thanks for posting.

I have one air plant that I got years ago. I never thought much of it until it bloomed and produced such pretty flowers!! Now I want to get more and make a pretty centerpiece with them. This post was a great reminder of all the wonderful variations there are!! 🙂

I have them and love them, too. I have lots of tropicals, but these are a fun and unique plant for the house.

First time commenting I think! Michael, I love your blog and what you’re doing in your home. Each time I look at your photos I admire these air plants, and I need to try and track some down here in Sydney. I love that they’re beautiful in their own way, but not too feminine or masculine. Just the perfect amount of nature and freshness. Not to mention how lovely they look under a cloche….my new love.

Love you air plants. Do your kitties bother them and are they poisonous?

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thanks Susie! I keep my air plants out of my cats reach for the most part. They are pretty middle cats and don’t climb too high. As far as I know, they are not poisonous to cats.

      xo Michael
